Summary of A Short Monsoon Diary
This chapter contains a few excerpts from Ruskin Bond’s diary. The chapter covers the author’s monsoon experiences in Mussoorie. The hills were shrouded in mist on the first day of monsoon. The first day of the monsoon mist is June 24th. The mist has blanketed the hills and quieted the birds. He can hear Bijju calling his sister and feels compelled to flee. He can’t see Bijju because of the mist. According to the author, the mist has altered the Mussoorie hills in two ways. For starters, one cannot see the hills, nor can one hear the birds chirping.
Unlike winter rain, the rain on June 25th is warm and humid, making it agreeable. The flowers are in full bloom. He refers to the hill station as “a Paradise that may have been.”
Due to the rain, leeches might be seen on June 27th. A leopard was also seen on camera grabbing dogs and other animals. There are also some new birds, such as minivets. Minivets are colourful birds that perch quietly amid the foliage. Several seasonal flowers are also in bloom.
It’s August 2nd, and it’s been raining all night. He enjoys the sound of rain on the tin roof. He feels unaffected yet is in contact with the rain.
The rain ends and there is sunlight on August 3rd. Animals, birds, and humans are all outside in the sun. The author is delighted to hear the song of a whistling thrush approaching from afar.
On August 12th, he writes that it had been pouring for more than a week. It is moist but not freezing. The hills are covered in flowers. If one must go out, he must wear an umbrel.
It’s August 31st, and monsoon growth is visible everywhere. The cobra lily seeds are turning crimson, indicating that the rains are coming to an end. When the holes are filled with rainwater, snakes and rats have sought refuge in attics, roofs, and godowns.
